It is all brand new today, everything about today is different. Started the morning at 4am, attended to my dogs before leaving for the city to pick up the 600 chicks which I ordered two weeks back. We had to be at the shop 7:30 sharp in order for us to be able to leave the city for home early to avoid the super hot sun. The chicks are just 2-3 days old and extremely fragile, an early and fast trip back would help minimize any loss. Anyway, we managed to get the chicks, feed and other supplies before taking the long drive back. Once back we placed the chicks in their holding pen while we fitted the lights up to keep them warm.
The entire day was spent monitoring the little birds, the rain came in its full might in the afternoon and the strong winds was a cause for concern as it was getting quite cold however we managed to change the 60W bulbs with those of 100W. The prophet had the hindsight to buy some extra bulbs this morning. The chicks are housed in two barns with 4 lights for each area. By the time the rain stopped it was close to 7pm, needless to say we were too tired to cook dinner so we went out for a quick one and then back to the barns to observe how the birds are doing. So far we had one casualty, I am hoping that the balance 599 will make it to be adult birds. The chicks are beautiful, we have three types of birds, the kampung, the broiler and the featherless necks... no official name for the latter as the seller could only tell us it is 'hollan kai' literally chickens from Holland, some called them the ‘Fu Xi Kai’ while others refer them as ‘Kon Gang Kai’ well, they are simply chickens with no feathers on their necks. They do look pretty cute with their bare necks.
Anyway, I am pretty exhausted after such a long day. Tomorrow would be another busy one for us. I am getting to really like the life here at the farm, it is all tough work but it is really fulfilling. After the big storm, the stars are out in full force tonight... wish you could see what I saw as I look up to the heavens above as I took a slow walk back home from the barn. The sight is something which I would not trade for anything else. Good night and God Bless!!!!
